The traditional first dance highlights the first scene of the program as the music closes to their hearts is pulled off by live wedding musicians, doing the best they can to enhance the feel of the moment.

This doesn't take too long and fades out after the chorus - enough to savor romance. 

When designing a reception program, you can either put to use the tradition before they sit down after the grand entrance or at the end of the show before their message of thanks. 

To my experience, I am comfortable doing the dance as one of the first parts of the program. Everybody is still around to witness.
